Submitting Artwork (Figures, Tables, Graphs, Photographs)

DO NOT embed your Figures, Graphs or Photographs in Word as this affects the quality of the images and we will not be able to use them.

Figures

  • Save each figure separately in its own file and in its original format. This would be the programme it was created in (usually TIFFs or JPEGs for halftones; EPS, Word, Excel or PowerPoint for line art).
    • Make sure you name the files accurately and in a way that they match up with the in-text call-outs. For instance, if you instruct the Editor to ‘Insert Figure 1.1 here’ you must make sure that the file with that figure in it is named ‘Figure 1.1’
  • If you provide figures as an image file (TIFF or JPEG), it should be supplied at a resolution of at least 1200 dots per inch (dpi) or pixels per inch. (You need a higher resolution for line art than for photos to ensure that the text is crisp and does not appear fuzzy.)
  • If you are downloading an image for use in your book, make sure it is as high a quality as you can make it. We will not be able to accept figures that do not meet the above requirements, so be prepared to source an alternative image if you cannot find a high quality image.

Tables

  • It is fine to submit Tables embedded into a Word document as long as they were created in Word.
  • We need all Tables in an editable format where possible.
  • If you have downloaded an image of a Table to use, then please make sure it is supplied as an image file (TIFF or JPEG) and at a resolution of at least 1200 dots per inch (dpi) or pixels per inch.
    • If you are supplying a Table as an image file, then save each table separately in its own file and in its original format.
    • Make sure you name the files accurately and in a way that they match up with the in-text call-outs. For instance, if you instruct the Editor to ‘Insert Table 1.1 here’ you must make sure that the file with that table in it is named ‘Table 1.1’

Graphs

  • It is possible to create a graph in Word – if this is where the graph was created, it is fine to leave it embedded in the Word document.
  • However, if you have created the graph in another program, such as Excel, please submit it as an Excel file.
  • If you are submitting a graph as an image file (for instance, if you have downloaded an image of a graph to use), then please make sure it is supplied as an image file (TIFF or JPEG) and at a resolution of at least 1200 dots per inch (dpi) or pixels per inch.
    • If you are supplying a Graph as an image file, then save each graph separately in its own file and in its original format.
    • Make sure you name the files accurately and in a way that they match up with the in-text call-outs. For instance, if you instruct the Editor to ‘Insert Graph 1.1 here’ you must make sure that the file with that graph in it is named ‘Graph 1.1’

Photographs

  • It is essential that you seek the permissions to use any photographs that you have not taken yourself. Please submit all permissions correspondence proving that you have the permissions to use these images to your Editorial Assistant. If you have not sought permission, then please be prepared to remove them from the manuscript.
  • Photographs must be provided as an image file (TIFF or JPEG), and at a resolution of at least 1200 dots per inch (dpi) or pixels per inch.
  • Save each photograph separately in its own file.
    • Make sure you name the files accurately and in a way that they match up with the in-text call-outs. For instance, if you instruct the Editor to ‘Insert Photograph 1.1 here’ you must make sure that the file with that photograph in it is named ‘Photograph 1.1’
